What is MFC (melamine faced chipboard)?
MFC is a composite board made from chipboard with a bonded melamine decorative surface, commonly used for kitchen cabinet carcasses and budget-range cabinet doors.
Melamine faced chipboard (MFC) consists of a chipboard core (made from compressed wood particles and adhesive) with a decorative melamine laminate bonded to one or both surfaces. The melamine layer provides a hard-wearing, wipeable finish in a range of colours and wood effect patterns, making it a standard choice for kitchen cabinet construction.
In kitchen fitting, MFC serves two main roles. It forms the box structure (carcass) of fitted cabinets, providing strength and rigidity at a lower cost than alternatives. Budget and mid-range cabinet door ranges also use MFC, with the melamine surface printed to mimic wood grain or offered in solid colours.
The key difference between MFC and MDF lies in the core material. Chipboard is denser and more stable than MDF for flat surfaces, resisting moisture better in kitchen conditions. However, MDF is typically smoother to work with for detailed edge profiles and is preferred when doors have routed or moulded edges. MFC edges must be covered with edging tape or trim to hide the raw particle structure, whereas MDF can be painted or veneered more seamlessly.
MFC remains popular with kitchen fitters in Bristol because it balances cost and durability for standard installations. Its melamine surface resists spills and staining better than raw chipboard, though it is less forgiving than solid wood or veneer if chipped or damaged.
