What is a soft-close hinge?
A soft-close hinge is a hinged mechanism with internal damping that slows and gently closes cabinet doors or drawers instead of allowing them to swing or slam shut.
Soft-close hinges contain a hydraulic or spring-loaded damping system that controls the speed of closure as a door or drawer approaches the frame. Rather than slamming to a stop, the mechanism gradually decelerates the movement, bringing the door to rest quietly and safely. This differs fundamentally from standard hinges, which rely on gravity or manual force alone and offer no speed control.
In a kitchen setting, soft-close hinges are fitted to cabinet doors above and below countertops, while soft-close drawer runners operate on similar principles but run along the sides of drawers. Both are operated by the same damping principle: as you push the door or drawer closed, friction within the mechanism smoothly arrests its motion in the final inches of travel.
Kitchen fitters typically specify soft-close hardware for mid-range to premium kitchen installations. The benefit extends beyond quietness. Soft-close mechanisms reduce wear on cabinet frames, prevent fingers from being trapped, and create a more refined kitchen feel.
